My husband has a mistress, her name is Alcohol,
No matter what he’s doing, he is right there when she calls.
He can always justify, the time he spends with her,
Whatever reason he can find, it’s her company he prefers.
She has been with him constantly, more than half his life.
She is number one in his priorities, higher than family, higher than wife.
But because he knows people more obsessed with her than him,
He doesn’t care how much control she has,
He doesn’t care if he sinks or swims.
In every messed up situation, that he finds himself in
It’s never his fault, he is innocent.
There is always perfect justification for any level of sin,
No responsibility or recognition of the damage his actions cause
Full-blown adult tantrums are now the unhinged new norm.
Seeing her control over him, becoming more and more complete
Is so hard to silently observe. Everything we previously had. is just used up and worn.
She has altered his personality taken away his laughter and light
Yet, I’m the only one who stays up and worries. Every single night.
She was always under his control – until she was not.
Whenever I voiced my concerns he assured me through and through
That I had nothing to worry about. Because he loved me too.
But she is an insidious entity, she is there every single day
Always, always, always.
He’s still here, but she has taken him away.
